Pressestimmen

A must-read. Acemoglu and Robinson are intellectual heavyweights of the first rank * Guardian * An important book * New York Times * An intellectually rich book that develops an important thesis with verve * FT * It's a great read. Like me, you may succumb to reading it in one go, and then you may come back to it again and again. -- Jared Diamond, Pulitzer-prize-winning author A must-read. Acemoglu and Robinson are intellectual heavyweights of the first rank ... they have done you the courtesy of writing a book that while at the intellectual cutting edge is not just readable but engrossing ... erudite and fascinating. -- Paul Collier * Observer * For those who think that a nation's economic fate is determined by geography or culture, Daron Acemoglu and Jim Robinson have bad news. It's man-made institutions, not the lay of the land or the faith of our forefathers, that determine whether a country is rich or poor. Synthesizing brilliantly the work of theorists from Adam Smith to Douglass North with more recent empirical research by economic historians, Acemoglu and Robinson have produced a compelling and highly readable book. And their conclusion is a cheering one: the authoritarian "extractive" institutions like the one's that drive growth in China today are bound to run out of steam. Without the inclusive institutions that first evolved in the West, sustainable growth is impossible, because only a truly free society can foster genuine innovation and the creative destruction that is its corollary. * Niall Ferguson, author of 'The Ascent of Money' * This fascinating and readable book centers on the complex joint evolution of political and economic institutions, in good directions and bad. It strikes a delicate balance between the logic of political and economic behavior and the shifts in direction created by contingent historical events, large and small at 'critical junctures'. Acemoglu and Robinson provide an enormous range of historical examples to show how such shifts can tilt toward favorable institutions, progressive innovation and economic success or toward repressive institutions and eventual decay or stagnation. Somehow they can generate both excitement and reflection. -- Robert Solow, Nobel Laureate in Economics It's the politics, stupid! That is Acemoglu and Robinson's simple yet compelling explanation for why so many countries fail to develop. From the absolutism of the Stuarts to the antebellum South, from Sierra Leone to Colombia, this magisterial work shows how powerful elites rig the rules to benefit themselves at the expense of the many. Charting a careful course between the pessimists and optimists, the authors demonstrate history and geography need not be destiny. But they also document how sensible economic ideas and policies often achieve little in the absence of fundamental political change. * Dani Rodrik, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard Universitry * Two of the world's best and most erudite economists turn to the hardest issue of all: why are some nations poor and others rich? Written with a deep knowledge of economics and political history, this is perhaps the most powerful statement made to date that 'institutions matter.' A provocative, instructive, yet thoroughly enthralling book. -- Joel Mokyr, Robert H. Strotz Professor of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Economics and History, Northwestern University Imagine sitting around a table listening to Jared Diamond, Joseph Schumpeter, and James Madison reflect on over two thousand years of political and economic history. Imagine that they weave their ideas into a coherent theoretical framework based on limiting extraction, promoting creative destruction, and creating strong political institutions that share power and you begin to see the contribution of this brilliant and engagingly written book. -- Scott E. Page, University of Michigan and Santa Fre Institute In this stunningly wide ranging book Acemoglu and Robinson ask a simple but vital question, why do some nations become rich and others remain poor? Their answer is also simple -- because some polities develop more inclusive political institutions. What is remarkable about the book is the crispness and clarity of the writing, the elegance of the argument, and the remarkable richness of historical detail. This book is a must read at a moment where governments right across the western world must come up with the political will to deal with a debt crisis of unusual proportions. -- Steve Pincus, Bradford Durfee Professor of History and International and Area Studies, Yale University Acemoglu and Robinson -- two of the world's leading experts on development -- explain why it is not geography, disease, or culture which explains why some nations are rich and some poor, but rather a matter of institutions and politics. This highly accessible book provides welcome insight to specialists and general readers alike. -- Francis Fukuyama Some time ago a little known Scottish philosopher wrote a book on what makes nations succeed and what makes them fail. The Wealth of Nations is still being read today. With the same perspicacity and with the same broad historical perspective, Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson have re-tackled this same question for our own times. Two centuries from now our great-great-...-great grandchildren will be, similarly, reading Why Nations Fail. -- George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 2001 Acemoglu and Robinson have made an important contribution to the debate as to why similar-looking nations differ so greatly in their economic and political development. Through a broad multiplicity of historical examples, they show how institutional developments, sometimes based on very accidental circumstances, have had enormous consequences. The openness of a society, its willingness to permit creative destruction, and the rule of appear to be decisive for economic development. -- Kenneth J. Arrow This not only a fascinating and interesting book: it is a really important one. The highly original research that Professors Acemoglu and Robinson have done, and continue to do, on how economic forces, politics and policy choices evolve together and constrain each other, and how institutions affect that evolution, is essential to understanding the successes and failures of societies and nations. And here, in this book, these insights come in a highly accessible, indeed riveting form. Those who pick this book up and start reading will have trouble putting it down. * Michael Spence * Why Nations Fail is a truly awesome book. Acemoglu and Robinson tackle one of the most important problems in the social sciences -- a question that has bedeviled leading thinkers for centuries -- and offer an answer that is brilliant in its simplicity and power. A wonderfully readable mix of history, political science, and economics, this book will change the way we think about economic development. Why Nations Fail is a must read book. * Steven Levitt, author of Freakonomics * Why Nations Fail is so good in so many ways that I despair of listing them all. It is an excellent book and should be purchased forthwith, so to encourage the authors to keep working. -- Charles C. Mann, author of 1491 and 1493 In this delightfully readable romp through 400 years of history, two of the giants of contemporary social science bring us an inspiring and important message: it is freedom that makes the world rich. Let tyrants everywhere tremble! -- Ian Morris, Stanford University, author of Why the West Rules - For Now The authors convincingly show that countries escape poverty only when they have appropriate economic institutions, especially private property and competition. More originally, they argue countries are more likely to develop the right institiutions when they have an open pluralistic political system with competition for political office, a widespread electorate, and openness to new politcial leaders. This intimate connection between political and economic institutions is the heart of their major contribution, and has resulted in a study of great vitality on one of the crucial questions in economics and political economy. -- Gary S. Becker, Nobel laureate in economics, 1992 This important and insightful book, packed with historical examples, makes the case that inclusive political institiutions in support of inclusive economic institutions iskey to sustained prosperity. The book reviews how some good regimes got launched and then had a virtuous spiral, while bad regimes remain in a vicious spiral. This is important analysis not to be missed. -- Peter Diamond, Nobel laureate in economics, 2010 A brilliant and uplifting book -- yet also a deeply disturbing wake-up call. Acemoglu and Robinson lay out a convincing theory of almost everything to do with economic development. Countries rise when they put in place the right pro-growth political institutions and they fail-often spectacularly-when those instituitons ossify or fail to adapt. Powerful people always and everywhere seek to grab complete control over government, undermining broader social progress for their own greed. Keep those people in check with effective democracy or watch your nation fail. -- Simon Johnson, co-author of 13 Bankers and professor at MIT Sloan a fascinating bit of scholarship that is laden with lots of interesting historical detail * Sunday Business Post * A must-read that makes sense of recent upheavals * Money Week * An intellectually rich book that develops an important thesis with verve. It should be widely read. -- Martin Wolf * FT * A vital work for these times -- William Easterly * Wall Street Journal *

Klappentext

Why are some nations more prosperous than others? Why Nations Fail sets out to answer this question, with a compelling and elegantly argued new theory: that it is not down to climate, geography or culture, but because of institutions. Drawing on an extraordinary range of contemporary and historical examples, from ancient Rome through the Tudors to modern-day China, leading academics Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson show that to invest and prosper, people need to know that if they work hard, they can make money and actually keep it - and this means sound institutions that allow virtuous circles of innovation, expansion and peace.Based on fifteen years of research, and answering the competing arguments of authors ranging from Max Weber to Jeffrey Sachs and Jared Diamond, Acemoglu and Robinson step boldly into the territory of Francis Fukuyama and Ian Morris. They blend economics, politics, history and current affairs to provide a new, powerful and persuasive way of understanding wealth and poverty.

Nr. 217 in Fremdsprachige Bücher (Siehe Top 100 in Fremdsprachige Bücher)

I really took my time with this book, controlled my inner “bookie monster”, and really tried to savour each piece of information and hypothesis presented in this brilliant piece of work.I was also fortunate to read it right after finishing “Prisoners of Geography” by Tim Marshall – here is the link, in case you are interested: - https://www.amazon.de/dp/1783962437, which allowed me to compare both thesis and critically challenge each one of them. While “Prisoners of Geography” provides great examples of how geography influenced a country’s initial development and is important for military strategy, it does not provide a satisfactory answer to why some of today’s countries are prosperous while others are struggling. On “Why Nations Fail”, the authors recognize that geography is not per se an argument to explain why some countries are more successful than others. Examples? North and South Korea, Botswana and Zimbabwe or even the US and Mexico. And while natural resources can highly benefit an economy, they do not really contribute to generalized wealth if a country is not inclusive – both economically and politically. This means that the book revolves around the idea that countries with inclusive political and economic institutions, which must allow citizen participation, and a certain degree of centralization generate incentives for entrepreneurship and, consequentially, economic growth. Basically, power distribution is essential for development, while power concentration in political and economic elites foments underdevelopment. The book is split in 13 incredibly interesting chapters that wonderfully present this thesis, oppose it to other common theses (cultural or geographical, for instance), provide examples to validate the main arguments and, finally, guess what the future may bring for a few nations (provided their path is unaltered).I learned so much than I could have asked for. This book is not only about economic hypotheses, but also gives you a lot of surprising information about the History and world events. Children picking cotton in Uzbekistan? The colonial atrocities in Indonesia? Botswana’s GDP per capita being bigger than some European countries? Those were some facts I did not know and surprised me. So this is an additional reason to recommend everyone this book. It is quite factual and can get slightly repetitive sometimes, but is so interesting that I consider it a must-read.

The central thesis of the book is quite simple: Prosperity is achieved when economical institutions are inclusive (allowing all citizens to participate and compete in markets under fair conditions) These inclusive economic institutions require inclusive political institutions, which allow different groups to participate in the political decision-making process. If that is not the case, if small elites are allowed to dominate politics, then they will manipulate economic institutions to their own benefit, extracting wealth from the other groups. Hence the labelling of these institutions as extractive. This thesis is elaborated on the 460 pages of the book, and the historical pathways of different societies leading to either inclusive or extractive institutions are analyzed.Examples acrually range from England to Kongo, from Australia to Argentina, from the old Maya Civilisation to modern day China. It is a dizzying array of examples, and occasionally one has the feeling that the historical events described in the book must have been more complex Therefore occasionally I have wondered whether these events really fit so perfectly into the line of arguments, which the authors have developed. And while they describe quite well what they understand as inclusive economic institutions (property rights, market access, 'level playing field' etc.) the definition of inclusive institutions remains a bit hazy. It's not democracy, but 'pluralism', 19th century Japan qualifies, Argentina does not.ButI found it a very interesting and thought-provoking book, which I wholeheartedly recommend. As somebody who is working in the field of development I find it lamentable that development orthodoxy since the Eighties is completely dominated by economic prescriptions (which hardly have worked). The rediscovering of politics and policies (and institutions) as an important precondition for growth and development was long overdue. And even if reality is too complexe to be fully covered even on 460 pages, this book certainly provides a good starting point.

A guide to support Organizations, Nation Building, Checks and Balances.

ausführlicher kommentar in Rotters Club

Ich habe eine Buchlesung zu diesem Buch gehört und es verschenkt.

For a terrific reading experience, have all three books in the trilogy in hand and read them one after the other. Read The Rotters' Club, The Closed Circle and then Middle England all in a row. The three together are so much stronger than anyone of the books alone.

Trying to catch up with UK life in the new age. I guess I did. Jonathan Coe revealed his identity: elite academic with only a patronizing understanding of his “inferiors”!

I’ve had mixed responses to Jonathan Coe novels over the years. I loved The Rotters’ Club and What a Carve Up!, I thought The Closed Circle (follow up to The Rotters’ Club) and House of Sleep were okay, and I’ve started one or two others that I couldn’t get through at all.Middle England picks up the story of the protagonists of The Rotters’ Club in 2010 and follows their stories up to and after the Brexit referendum. It doesn’t have a conventional narrative arc, it’s more a series of vignettes showing how Benjamin, Doug and co react to current events and to changes in their personal lives. It’s a bit like a hearing a series of anecdotes about old friends, moderately entertaining if you know them (though I’m not sure you’d be interested if you don’t).While What a Carve Up! took apart Tory rule with savagery and humour and heart, I found this examination of Brexit terribly condescending. If you’ve been following politics at all in recent years, I don’t think you’ll learn or experience anything new. If you’re not interested in politics, why would you read it at all?The political points made in the novel, such as they are, are so crass and obvious that they make phone-ins seem erudite. Benjamin’s father and pretty much everyone of their generation is a cross between Victor Meldrew and Katie Hopkins, while it seems the true pain of Brexit for the protagonists is that they have to listen to dreadful people’s views over dinner.I know that people actually do say the things that you think are only clichés (who hasn’t sat through an awkward family Christmas or a wedding trying to ward off comments about how ‘the neighbourhood has gone downhill since they moved in’, or ‘my best friend’s cousin’s brother is getting a fortune in disability and he plays golf three times a week’) but in a novel don’t we want something a bit more challenging? Something that tries to understand the lives and thoughts of people who disagree with us? Something to make us consider the bigger forces that led us to this point? If Coe is on the side of progressives, why does he make all the characters so unsympathetic and out of touch? Sophie, Benjamin’s niece, doesn’t think racism is a thing in one chapter, then in the next thinks an Asian woman is ‘brave’ because she runs a class for speeding drivers(?!). Sophie’s beginning a career in higher education but instead of struggling to pay the rent on precarious short-term contracts, she drifts airily between teaching in Birmingham, research at the British Library and lucrative private lecture gigs. The people who are really suffering are at the periphery of the story. Doug’s privileged daughter, who invites herself to a riot on a kind of poverty safari, is at least self-aware.I don’t think you can call it satire if it doesn’t make you laugh, or give you some insight, or motivate you to change. This just made me sad.*I received a copy of Middle England from the publisher via Netgalley.

This has been reviewed in the main media extensively. And Coe has many regular readers. What can a posting here add?It is easy to read. Coe fashions great set pieces and can be very funny. The story is set out plainly, the characters have depth without complications. He covers the period, 2010 to 2018 well, and gets the details correct. It is the third of a series and for those familiar with the first two pleasure can be found in seeing how lives change with circumstance and age. The effect of the latter is at least as important as the former. Many of the main characters are coming to the close of their parts if not in the circumstances they desired. Love is still possible, if in the case of Benjamin Trotter difficult and highly amusing. It has been trailed as a Brexit novel. Some will feel that the cast is mainly middle-class – but as most of the cast come from the earlier novels, it could not be otherwise. Most are hostile to Brexit but again that fits with their characters already established. For this reader the dramatic centre of the novel is the opening night of 2012 watched by all the characters on television. He captures so well the generous and genuine patriotism of the London Olympics. How did that turn so sour, inward-looking and in truth vicious four years later? It is hard not to agree with Coe and identify maleficent forces at work. Orwell would have made more of this, of course, and more potently and pointedly. Coe's satire is much more muted. The novel has a soft ending. People look to the future. A further instalment is promised. One hopes our better selves will have triumphed when it is finally written. The name of one character was auctioned off. You can cheat to find out, but it might be more intriguing to discover it through the novel.

I have read, and loved, all of Coe's previous novels and Middle England is no exception. However, I almost didn't read it because I am so depressed by the Brexit news everyday I just couldn't face a 'Brexit novel'! I am so glad I did though.Middle England forms a trilogy with previous books The Rotter's Club and Closed Circle. And what a trilogy it is! Middle England brings us back in touch with the same characters twenty years on, as they reach middle age. I did feel that the Brexit element was a little heavy-handed in parts of this novel (I know, I know, it's a Brexit novel but even so...) but as usual his characters were sharply drawn, sometimes cartoonish but only in a way that reflects the real-life political buffoons that have been inflicted on us, and his depictions of the ups and downs of long-term friendships and relationships had real pathos at times.Coe's writing is a pure joy to read.
